Alvin Albert Schmeichel, Freeland, Michigan

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away early Sunday, November 01, 2009, at home. Age 88 years. He was born June 13, 1921, in Odessa, Minnesota, the son of the late Henry and Ida (Steffen) Schmeichel. He engaged in farming most of his life. He retired from Freeland Middle School, where he had been employed as custodian for many years. He enjoyed working with wood, especially splitting wood. He was an active member of the West Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses for 72 years, serving as minister and Elder, and spending many hours in the Christian ministry and conducting Bible studies. He married Janice Ann Vasold on October 24, 1959, celebrating 50 years of marriage one week ago; she survives him. He also leaves three sons, one daughter, and their spouses, Nathan and Lori Schmeichel, of Bay City; Joel and Ronda Schmeichel, Dawn and David Arredondo, and Peter and Rebekah Schmeichel, all of Freeland; six grandchildren, Keegan, Eliana, Lucas, Hannah, Callee and Arielle; one sister, Mabel Hagness, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; several nieces, nephews and their families; and a special friend, Raymond Rohrbach, of South Dakota. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Beth Ann Schmeichel, and by two brothers, Harvey and Elmer Schmeichel. Private burial has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2009, at the West Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall, 6025 Shattuck Road.
