Ila Marie (Otterbein) Johnson, Saginaw, Michigan

Passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI, while visiting her family. Age 82 years. Ila M. Otterbein was born September 8, 1926 in Ionia, Michigan to the late John and Sarah (Johnson) Otterbein. She was married to Alger D. Johnson on June 26, 1949 in Barryton, MI. He preceded her in death on October 28, 1991. Ila graduated from Barryton High School and then Central Michigan University. She taught school in Reed City, Sand Lake and Edmore. Ila was very active at Ames United Methodist Church after the family moved to Saginaw in 1965. She sang in the choir, played bells and held many positions in the United Methodist Women, including Saginaw Bay District President. Ila was also the cafeteria cashier at Eaton Rapids Campmeeting every July for many years. She was an avid bell collector and belonged to the local bell collectors club. She is survived by her sister, Luella Showers of Grand Rapids; four children: Gregory (Rebecca) Johnson of Kalamazoo, Jeffery Johnson of Saginaw, Ann Johnson of Kalamazoo and Kathy (Jerry) Lentz of Paw Paw; grandchildren: Benjamin (Libby), Mark, and Jennifer Johnson, Eric, Andrew and Dylan Lentz; and a great-grandson, Eli Johnson. Her husband, a sister, Helen Kemp, and a grandson, Matthew Johnson preceded Ila in death. A funeral service for Ila will take place at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 26, 2009 at Ames United Methodist Church, 2015 Hanchett St. Rev. Mark Karls will officiate. Internment will take place at 3:15 p.m. on Friday in Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeview, Michigan. Friends may call at the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd., (off State) on Thursday, June 25, 2009 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Ila will lie in state at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
