Robert R. Cook, Saginaw, Michigan

Well known attorney and community leader passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Covenant-Harrison. Age 92 years. The son of the late Robert H. and Alice (Robertson) Cook was born August 26, 1916 in Saginaw. He was a graduate of Saginaw High School, Class of 1934; Alma College, Class of 1938 and of the University of Michigan Law School, Class of 1948. He served with the U. S. Navy during WWII. He married Naomi Thompson, November 27, 1943. She survives him. The Cook family name has been prominent in the Saginaw legal community for over 90 years. Bob began his law career with the firm Cook and Cook which later became Cook, Nash, Deibel and Borrello; then Cook, Nash and Deibel. With the retirement of his other partners, Bob associated with long-time colleague, Jake Shinners, establishing the firm of Shinners and Cook, P.C. He was a member of the Saginaw County Bar Association and the Michigan State Bar for over 60 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Saginaw Downtown Rotary Club, Torch Club, Saginaw Junior Chamber of Commerce; United Advisory Scholarship Commission; Saginaw Board of Education where he had served as Secretary; the Saginaw Country Club and the Saginaw Club. He served on the Board of Directors of the Saginaw Y.M.C.A; as Past President of the Norman Westlund Child Guidance Clinic; an honorary life long board member of The Home for the Aged; a board member of Saginaw Community Hospital, the Saginaw Symphony Orchestra, the United Way of Saginaw and Hospice; a director of the Crippled Children’s Society and a Charter Director of the Saginaw County Drug Treatment Center. He served as Associate General Chairman of the Timber-r-r Town Festival. Bob had spent summers at Glen Lake in Glen Arbor, Michigan since he was four years old. He was a member of the Glen Arbor Yacht Club. Surviving besides his wife Naomi, are a brother and sister-in-law, Webster and Lois Cook, Glen Lake; two nieces, one nephew. The funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church, 121 S. Harrison St. Saginaw. Dr. Robert L. Emrich will officiate with entombment in Chapel Hill Mausoleum. Friends may call at the W. L. Case and Co. Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Road from 3:00-5:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. Tuesday and then at the Church from 10:00 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the funeral service.
