Snell, Doris H. (Dopp), Alma, Michigan


Decided her work was done here on this earth and passed away at her daughter Pat’s home in Alma on March 4, 2015, surrounded by many family members. Age 93 years. Doris was born on March 22, 1921 to Harriet (Nelson) and Fredrick Dopp in Mt. Haley township where she was also raised on the family farm. On June 6th 1937 she married Riley E. McIntosh. They had four children, Riley E.II, Patricia, Kathleen and JoAnn. She worked while raising her children as a taxi driver, and in a plastics factory in Midland. On December 7, 1944 Doris married Arthur L. Snell. They added two boys to the family, John A. Snell and Robert L. Snell of Midland. While still raising this large family, she worked for 28 years at the A & P Store in the meat department. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and also taught 4-H sewing for many years, having many first place seamstress’. Doris retired in 1983 to enjoy her home on Sanford Lake that her 6 children gathered to help build in 1968, with her supervision. She lived there until October 2008, and moved to the Alpine Village and was the first resident in the new section. She enjoyed traveling, reading, and gardening. Doris is survived by her children, Patricia (Milton) Wright of Alma, Kathleen Lettau of Florida, JoAnn (David) Holwerda of Frankfort, John (Terry) Snell of Midland and Robert (Nancy) Snell of Midland, her daughter in law Tina McIntosh of Midland and Sister in law Betty Dopp of Midland. Doris is also survived by 12 Grandchildren, 24 Great Grandchildren and 6 Great, Great, Grandchildren. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers in infancy, brothers Reginald and Harold Dopp, son Riley E. McIntosh II, and a Granddaughter Jane E. Gravlin. A service celebrating Doris’ life will be held on Monday, March 9, 2015 at 1 p.m. at Smith-Miner Funeral Home. Friends may visit with the family from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service.
