Many are now mourning the loss of the most wonderful person they have ever known. After a lifetime spent caring for others, Irene Jane Pittenger, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at the Cartwright Hospice Residence. Age 91 years. The daughter of the late William and Hilda (Smith) Beckmann, Irene was born March 29, 1924 in Saginaw, Michigan. Irene married James Pittenger who predeceased her April 16, 1984. Irene was employed at Kroger’s for over 30 years and retired as head cashier. She enjoyed caring for animals and supported organizations that did as well. Irene led a life dedicated to showering those around her with love and affection; especially her grandchildren who she adored. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and James Vallender, Freeland; three grandchildren, Michael and Robin Vallender, Timothy and Corie Vallender, Kelly and Brian Ulery; four great-grandchildren, Rowan, Mae, Ivy Irene and Andrew; several nieces and nephews. Irene was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Fred, Curtis, Dwight, Robert, Elmer and Roland Beckmann, Alvina Spitz and Ardis Gaiser. Funeral service will take place on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at 1 p.m. at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Road. Chaplain Katherine Penney will officiate with burial in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Freeland. Friends may call at the funeral home where the family will be present on Saturday from 11 a.m. until time of service.
