Oravitz, Louis G., Hemlock, Michigan


Beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away Monday, January 19, 2015 after a lingering illness, at Covenant HealthCare Cooper Campus with his family at his side. Age 80 years. Son of the late John and Bernice (Molesworth) Oraves, Louis was born March 8, 1934 in Gladwin, Michigan. Louis grew up in the Saginaw area and spent much time with his family in Gladwin after the early death of his mother. He enjoyed varied careers as news carrier, mechanic, laborer, and union leader. It was while working as a mechanic in his late teens that he met his future wife Shirley after being introduced by her brother Paul. They were married on October 19, 1957. Together they raised five children, Kathy, Jackie, Chris, Mike and Laurie. Shortly before his marriage he entered the military and served in the 101st Air Borne Division serving as a paratrooper. He was a lifetime member of AMVETS Association. After leaving the military, he rejoined Local 47 Heat and Frost Insulators. He worked for various contractors over the years finishing up with Owens Corning. He also served as union president to the Local 47 and trustee to the pension and welfare fund for 29 years. He would continue to receive calls regarding benefit questions for many years after his retirement from the fund. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Shirley and children, Katherine and Dale Briggs, Jacqueline Oravitz, Chris and Sara Oravitz, Michael and Connie Oravitz, Lauretta and Steve Komlos; 13 grandchildren, Kristine Briggs, David (Amber) Briggs, Heather (Cliff) Kvidahl and Micah (Rachel) Briggs; Jacob, Hannah, Olivia, Naomi and Alex Oravitz; Gabriel and Samuel Oravitz; Madeline and Anastasia Komlos; his great-granddaughter, Paisley Kvidahl. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bernice Oraves and brother, Gerald Oravitz. The family wishes to thank his many physicians and the staff at Covenant HealthCare who cared for him, especially Dr. Damuth, Dr. Dymek, Dr. Kuligowski, Dr. Hendricks, Dr. Aaron Smith, the Dialysis Associate physicians and others. They also wish to extend special thanks to the ER staff, Cardiac Care Unit Staff and pastoral care staff at Covenant. Particular thanks to Marnie, April, Rob, Chris, Amy and the respiratory care team. Funeral Liturgy will take place on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John XXIII Parish, St. Mary Catholic Church site, 151 St. Marys Drive, Hemlock.. Rev. Fr. Duane A. Wachowiak will officiate. Private burial will take place in Highland Cemetery, Gladwin. Friends may call at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Road, where the family will be present on Thursday, January 22, 2015 from 2:00-8:00 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass. A Vigil Service will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
