Beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother passed away unexpectedly Thursday, April 9, 2015 surrounded by his family. Age 81 years. The son of the late Francis and Agnes (Petersen) Houlihan, Tom was born December 19, 1933 in Saginaw, Michigan. He married Rose Emmendorfer, his loving wife of nearly 57 years, on May 3, 1958. She survives him. Tom was a lifelong resident of Saginaw and graduated from Saginaw High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion Post #439. Following his military service, Tom joined his brothers, Jack and Bill, in the family business, Houlihan Bros. Builders. He spent many years in the business until his recent retirement. Tom was an honorary lifetime member of the Saginaw Home Builders Association where he served two terms as President, a member of the Spike Club and was honored with Builder of the Year Award in 1995. He was a director with Michigan Commercial Insurance Mutual (MCIM). Tom was a member of the Saginaw County Planning Commission and a former member of the Saginaw Township Planning Commission. He was also a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church, Msgr. Thomas Horton Assembly #2049 and the Fordney Club. Tom was an avid golfer and a past member of Maple Hill Golf Club. He loved to travel and enjoyed being busy with projects like building the family cottage at Higgins Lake. Tom was always willing and ready to help anyone who needed him. He most enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. Surviving besides his wife Rose are three daughters and their spouses, Lisa and Ron Badour, Saginaw; Jennifer and Brian Johnson, Bay Port; Melissa and Eric Nowosatka, Saginaw; five grandchildren, Tara Badour, Emma Badour, Thomas Johnson, Melissa Johnson and Sean Nowosatka; two sisters and one brother, Jane and Donald Grill, Margaret and Thomas Schultz, Patrick and Nancy Houlihan; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Dorothy Houlihan, Mary Lou Houlihan, Mary Ann Emmendorfer, Laverne Emmendorfer, Gerald and Linda Emmendorfer, Delores Kohagen, Carol Sharko and Diane Stikeleather; many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Tom was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters and their spouses, John Houlihan, William and Doreen Houlihan, Ruth and Alex Szabo, Ann Houlihan, Kathleen and R. William Bourdow, Michael Houlihan; Tom’s mother-in-law and father-in-law, Hilda and Leonard Emmendorfer; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Robert Emmendorfer, Marlene Emmendorfer, Vivian Emmendorfer and Louis Stikeleather. Funeral Liturgy will take place on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Steven Gavit will officiate. Honoring Mr. Houlihan’s wishes, cremation will follow. Friends may call at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Road, where the family will be present on Monday from 2-8 p.m. and at St. Stephen Catholic Church on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until time of Mass. The Knights of Columbus Council #4232 will pray the Rosary at 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. A Vigil Service, led by Sharon Wahl, Pastoral Associate, will take place at 6 p.m. Monday.
