Hilger, Harley Allen, Naples, FL


Passed away on January 23, 2015 in Naples, FL, where he lived since 1983. Age 92 years. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 54 years, Betty Ann (Sontag) Hilger, and younger brother, Robert Hilger. He is survived by two sons: Wayne Hilger and his wife, Susan, of Saginaw, MI and Lloyd Hilger and his wife, April, of Grass Lake, MI and two devoted grandsons and great grandson: Grant, Rachel, and Jake of Freeland, MI and Drew and Jenessa of Essexville, MI. Harley also leaves behind his very special friend of 15 years, Dorothy Julien, and her family. Born on April 12, 1922 in South Detroit, MI, Harley attended Detroit Public Schools and earned his degree in Finance from Walsh College. He and his wife met through Luther League and were married in June, 1944. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1943 to 1946, as a Records Clerk/First Lieutenant. Harley enjoyed his 42-year career at Detroit Diesel (General Motors Division), Central Foundry in Saginaw, MI and Saginaw Steering Gear. Following his retirement in 1983 he moved to Florida with his wife. Throughout his life, Harley gave generously of his time and talent to Covenant Hospital Board (formerly St. Luke’s) in Saginaw, MI, Naples Community Hospital, Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and Literacy Volunteers of America. He was also an active member of Shepherd of the Glades Lutheran Church, Gulfshores GM Retired Executives Club, and Solo Singles where he met his companion, Dorothy. Harley loved life and it showed in the kind, warm way he treated friends, family, colleagues and neighbors. He will be remembered always for his uncanny ability to make people feel special. His powerful faith in God inspired him to cherish each day of life and to always be of service to others. He will be greatly missed by many. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 30, 2015 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home, 525 111th Avenue North. Funeral services honoring his life will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Shepherd of the Glades Lutheran Church, 6020 Rattlesnake Hammock, with Rev. Dr. Douglas Wahlberg officiating. Visitation prior to the service begins at 10:00 a.m. Private interment services will be held later at Naples Memorial Gardens.
