Garcia, Oralia Rebecca, Alma, Michigan

Passed away February 6, 2015, at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born at home in North Shade Township, Hubbardston, MI, the daughter of Luciano and San Juanita Garcia, both of whom came from Bustamante Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Oralia was the fifth of thirteen children. She married Benito R. Garcia on February 4, 1967, and they were residents of Alma for 48 years. As a young woman, Mrs. Garcia worked as a nurse at Clinton Memorial Hospital, Sparrow Hospital, Ingham County Hospital, and Gratiot Community Hospital. She retired from Eight Cap, Inc. where she worked for 30 years as Gratiot County’s community service worker. She was instrumental in opening Gratiot County Commission on Aging. She was an advocate for women of domestic violence and child abuse. She was the voice for the poor who could not help themselves. Rebecca was an avid seamstress. She loved to bake and cook. She loved to play bingo and slot machines, and to travel and spent much time with family and friends. She is survived by her children, Rebecca (Michael) Fawcett and grandson Nicholas George of Alma, and Andres (Kelly) Garcia and granddaughters San Juanita Ann and Gabrielle Marie Garcia and grandson Zachary Lippert, of St. Louis. She was also a friend and stepmother to Benito J. Garcia, Jr. of Saginaw, Ranialdo "Ray" Garcia of Denver, CO, Maria Carapia of St. Louis, Rose Cortez of Denver, CO, and Estella Juarez; many grandchildren, great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Hermino (Christina) Roldan of Mission, TX, Merced (Irene) Garcia of Whitecloud, FL, Eva Zuniga of Lennon, MI, Francisca Zuniga of Flint and Irving, TX, Robert (Francene) Garcia of Ovid, and Randolph (Lois) Garcia of Byron; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Benito R. Garcia, Sr.; parents; her sister, Suzanne Massey; and her brothers, Louis, John, Dan, Edward, and Roland Garcia. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Nativity of the Lord (St. Mary’s) Catholic Church in Alma, with Father Nate officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rest Cemetery in St. Johns. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 with a Rosary service at 7:30 p.m., at the Barden Funeral Home in Ithaca.
