Zimmerman, Ferris Neal (Zimmy), Mancelona, MI, Formerly of Saginaw, Michigan


Passed away from cancer into the arms of Jesus from the arms of his daughter with his loving family by his side in the early morning hours on Tuesday, August 12, 2014. Age 81 years. Ferris was born an only child to Theodore Christopher and Audrey Verona (Lee) Zimmerman on February 17, 1933 in Isabella, Oklahoma, they predeceased him. He moved with his parents to Saginaw, Michigan in 1936. Ferris attended Jessie Loomis and Central Jr. High Schools in Saginaw. He then moved with his parents to Defiance, Ohio in 1947. He graduated from Defiance High School in 1951. He was a veteran of the Korean War conflict where he earned the Korean War Service Ribbon, three bronze stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and two overseas bars. He married Marjorie Joann Ortman on May 7, 1955. She predeceased him September 2, 1982. He then met his companion of 26 years, Helen Margaret Honey. She predeceased him January 20, 2009. Zimmy retired from General Motors Malleable Iron in 1990 after 35 years of service. He was a machinist in the pattern shop. He was a member of American Legion Post 22. He served as cub master with the Cub Scouts from 1966 to 1972. Ferris was an accomplished bowler for many years in the Saginaw Bowling Association and realized a lifelong dream of achieving two 300 games within three months of each other. He was inducted in the Bowlers Hall of Fame in St. Louis, Missouri twice. He was also a golfer, dart player, and was involved with the Saginaw Darting League Association. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and spent many years enjoying hunting at his vacation home with his sons and grandchildren in Lake City, Michigan. He spent 12 years with his family and friends enjoying his parents' resort on Crooked Lake in Angola, Indiana. He was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Pistons and WWE wrestling. Ferris was a Christian and was saved on August 1, 2014, and knew the love of Jesus before he passed away. Surviving are two sons and one daughter; Gregg Theodore (Roberta Jean) Zimmerman, Dean Arthur (Joanne Nadine) Zimmerman, and Diane Audrey (Lawrence Paul) Zimmerman-Albosta, seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren; Courtney Elizabeth and Marlo Marjorie ( Fiance Timothy Long) Zimmerman, Mitchell Dean, Rochelle Ann (Ryan Sean) Cavanaugh and great granddaughter Chelsea Rebecca Cavanaugh, Chelsea Rae (Timothy) Kertland, Jarrod Paul-Neal Albosta, and Amanda Renee Albosta, and a great granddaughter Valencia Elizabeth Garcia, and many other loving family members and many friends. The funeral and committal service will take place on Friday, August 15, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. at the Reitz Herzberg Funeral Home, 1550 S. Midland Road (S. M-47). The family welcomes friends to visit at the funeral home on Friday from 2:00 p.m. until the 5:00 p.m. funeral. The family encourages fellowship after the funeral service. Entombment will take place on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Oakwood Mausoleum with military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post 22.
