Roe, Robert Carl, Saginaw, Michigan

Passed away Thursday, June 12, 2014. Age 86 years. Born on January 5, 1928, in Owendale, Michigan, to the late Gordon P. and Adiah Roe, “Bob” was the fifth of nine children. As a young man, Bob worked for his father at Roe Film Service, delivering movie reels to theaters throughout the thumb. On his 18th birthday he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and would serve on the U.S.S. Princeton until his honorable discharge in 1948. On December 16, 1950, Bob eloped with his high school sweetheart, Jean Commins, in Angola, Indiana. They would go on to have two children together, son Robert George and daughter Cynthia Jo. Throughout his life Bob was especially proud of his son George, and loved George’s wife Jeanette as though she were his own daughter. Early in his career Bob owned and operated a gas station in Bad Axe, Michigan. Jean’s nursing career soon took them to Saginaw, and Bob began his career as a Teamster driver, a “Bread Man” rising before dawn to deliver baked goods throughout mid Michigan. A strong work ethic was a source of pride for Bob, a value that he instilled in his children and grandchildren. A big part of Bob’s life outside of work was entertaining friends and family at he and Jean’s cottage, located outside of Harrison, Michigan. Captaining his pontoon boat, keeping an immaculate yard, and lovingly teasing his grandchildren occupied much of his weekend time at the cottage. After retirement Bob & Jean, known as Papa and Mamie to their grandchildren, became snowbirds – spending their summers at the cottage and wintering in Pensacola, Florida. Their love for each other was evident to anyone they met – especially to those who saw them on the dance floor. After years of happiness and love, Jean pre-deceased him in 1995. After Jean’s passing, Bob returned to Saginaw where he would spend his latter years. He soon found a steadfast companion, Ms. Jo Franks, with whom he shared the remainder of his life. Bob and Jo enjoyed traveling around Michigan, spending time in their pool and visiting with family. They were always at each other’s side and clearly shared a fond appreciation for one another; she survives him. Bob also leaves behind a family who loved him and cherishes his memory. He is survived by his son George Roe and special daughter-in-law Jeanette, of Saginaw, and their children; Glen and fiancée Lila (Alexandria, VA); Alex, his wife Amanda and Bob’s great-granddaughter Rylie (Grand Rapids); Georgie (Singapore); and Jenna (Washington, D.C.). He is also survived by his daughter, Cindy, and her children; Josh Sullivan (St. Petersburg, FL); and Carrie Sullivan and her fiancé Michael (New York, NY). Bob is also survived by a brother, Earl Roe and his wife Jeanine, and sister, Dorothy Radabaugh and her husband Paul, sister-in-law Dorothy Kohl Roe, Jean’s sister Karen Voigt, and many nieces and nephews. Bob was also pre-deceased by four brothers, Gordon E. and wife Lillian, Clayton, Donald, and Bill, and two sisters, Eva and husband J.D., and Latheria. The family will host a visitation on Saturday, June 21 at 10:00 a.m. at Reitz Herzberg Funeral Home, 1550 Midland Road. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Bob’s niece, Rev. Jackie Roe. Cremation has taken place; final interment will take place at a later date in Owendale, alongside Jean. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send a memoriam to Luther Manor, 3161 Davenport Ave., Saginaw, MI 48602.
