Fliegel Jr., Joseph P., Saginaw Township, Michigan

Beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away on Monday, June 9, 2014 at Covenant HealthCare Cooper Campus. Age 71 years. The son of the late Joseph P. Fliegel, Sr. and Jeanne Marie (Roberts) Fliegel, Joe was born on October 3, 1942 in Saginaw, Michigan. He married Susan A. Pavlicek on July 26, 1975 in Saginaw, Michigan. She survives him. Joe graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1960 and on January 3, 1961 joined the United States Air Force where he served with the Strategic Air Command 814th Combat Support Group during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War. In 1965 he returned to Saginaw and became a letter carrier with the United States Postal Service. In 1970 he joined the Buena Vista Township Police Department where in 1971 he received an award for action taken and bravery under fire while apprehending an armed gunman who was shooting at other officers. In 1972 he joined the Saginaw County Sheriff Department being one of the first two undercover narcotics agents for the department and was the Exchange Club’s Officer of the Year in 1974. He retired from the department in late 1993. He was an active member of St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church of Freeland and served on the church council. He was a member of the Saginaw County Deputy Sheriff Association, Saginaw County Law Enforcement Association, American Legion Post #439, United Commercial Travelers of America Council #43 and the Saginaw River Marine Historical Society. Surviving besides his wife Susan are his children, Dr. Jason J. (Holly) Fliegel, Frankenmuth; Susan M. (Rob) Tanke, Berrien Springs; a granddaughter, Brittany Tanke; three step-grandchildren, Colten, Kylee and Blake; a sister, Joanne (Jody) Riddick Sjostrom, Sarasota, Florida; a dear sister-in-law, Patricia Schoenmeyer; brother-in-law, John Pavlicek; and nephew, Brett Schoenmeyer. Pastors Tim Nommensen, Guy Purdue and Spencer Biga were an inspiration and best friends in Joe’s life. The family would like to thank his friends and church family for their love, support and prayers. Funeral Service will take place on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6185 Hospital Road in Freeland. Pastor Spencer Biga will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Road (between Shattuck and McCarty), where the family will be present on Wednesday from 3:00-8:00 p.m. and on Thursday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
