Schmude, Janet G., Saginaw, Michigan


Passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at Cartwright Hospice Residence. Age 72 years. Janet G. Yakes was born on January 12, 1941, in Port Huron, MI to the late James A. and Genevieve H. (Bourke) Yakes. She was married to C. John Schmude on August 10, 1963, in Port Huron, sharing 50 loving years together. He survives her. She was employed as a teacher for many years. Janet was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where she served as teller, council secretary, archivist and lector, and volunteered as a Girl Scout and Brownie leader. She also lovingly made prayer shawls and stuffed bears for patients at Cartwright Hospice Residence. Surviving besides her husband, John, is a son, a daughter and their spouses, John P. (Theresa) Schmude, Saginaw; Johanna (Rodney) Wakeman, Saginaw; her “favorite” grandchildren, Kayla Wakeman and Chad Schmude; sisters and brother, Mary Payne, Montague; Katherine Yakes, Port Huron; and Dr. Daniel (Jeanne) Yakes, Whitehall; many nieces and nephews; one aunt, Margaret Byrnes, Grand Haven; and a half-sister, Dona Hager, York Beach, Maine. Funeral service will take place on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 5335 Brockway Road. The Rev. Mark Buckert will officiate with burial in Holy Cross Lutheran Cemetery. Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the Wakeman Funeral Home, Inc., 1218 N. Michigan Ave., on Friday from 2:00-8:00 p.m., then at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given to Valley Lutheran High School Foundation or The Salvation Army.
