Schmidt, John “O”, Saginaw, Michigan


Loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather went to be with his Savior on Thursday, August 8, 2013. He was 93. John was born January 4, 1920 in Auburn, the son of John and Emma Schmidt. He graduated from Midland High School. After graduation he worked for Pure Oil and Dow Chemical before enlisting in the Navy, where he served three and a half years during WW II. After his discharge, John and his brother Earl were partners in IGA grocery stores in Auburn and Bay City. John married Lois Jean Radde of Midland on June 22, 1947. She was the love of his life, and they were happily married for 66 years. Lois survives him. John moved to Saginaw in 1956 and began a career in real estate that lasted more than 50 years. He was the owner of John “O” Schmidt Realty (“We Make Solds Happen”) and later worked at Prudential Realty. He was twice President of the Saginaw Board of Realtors. He was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church, serving as an Elder and on the Board of Missions and Evangelism. John was also involved with other ministries, including Lutheran Via de Cristo, Kairos and Keyrx Prison Ministries, Lutheran Hour Ministries, the Saginaw Good Friday Worship Service, and the Lutheran Laymen’s League. He attended the LLL retreat at Camp Arcadia for 56 years. John and Lois received special joy from their Christ Care Group. John was a member of the Fordney Club, Germania Club, and Saginaw Club. He loved to sing, dance, tell corny jokes, and play the harmonica, guitar, and piano. He enjoyed playing cards, hunting, fishing, golfing, skiing, bowling, camping, and spending time at the family cabin in McKinley. Surviving besides his wife Lois are three sons, Ronald (Yvonne), Saginaw; Dennis (Pamela), Cedar Falls, Iowa; Russell (Rebecca), St. Charles, Missouri; John was blessed with six grandchildren, Todd Schmidt, Travis Schmidt (Tiffany Snow, fiancée), Leigh Schmidt, Kari (Brent) Dahlstrom, Karen (Michael) Groves and Emily (Andrew) Menz; he was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren, Hailey, Tristan, Ava, Reese, Flynn, Laurel, Henry, and Lillian. John was predeceased by his parents and nine siblings, Leona, Edna, Irene, Emma, J. Elmer, Harold, Earl, Lorraine and James. John’s funeral service will take place on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 3427 Adams Ave., Saginaw. Rev. C. Wm. Weis will officiate. Interment will take place at Lutheran Home Cemetery, Auburn. Friends may call at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Road (between Shattuck and McCarty), where the family will be present on Monday from 2:00-8:00 p.m. and at Peace Lutheran Church on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
