Palmer, Richard Leon (Sauve), Thomas Township, Michigan


Passed away Thursday, November 21, 2013 with his loving wife and children at his side at Covenant Medical Center in Saginaw. Age 82 years. Son of the late Mae (Palmer) Logan and Leon Sauve of Saginaw, Richard was born June 1, 1931 in Saginaw, Michigan. He married Ardath J. VonSchipmann on September 20, 1949. They just celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. Richard served his country in the U.S. Naval Reserve during WWII for four years. He was employed at Eaton Manufacturing in Saginaw until his retirement. In years prior, he was a concrete contractor, doing work for the City of Saginaw and driving concrete trucks for a local concrete supplier. He was also a professional diver who enjoyed skin diving. He also volunteered for water recovery missions with the Saginaw County Sheriff’s Department in his younger years with his friend, the late Bill Ellis. Richard is a life-long charter member of the Saginaw Underwater Explorers, which began in 1959. He had five children, two of which pre-deceased him. Son, Keith Alan Palmer passed in December, 1980 and a daughter, Janelle Murieko (Palmer) passed in August, 2012. Surviving besides his wife Ardath, are one son, two daughters and their spouses; Bruce Palmer and wife Vickie (Bauknecht), of Thomas Twp.; Valerie Wise (Palmer) and husband Robert Wise of Freeland; and Tracy Hamic (Palmer) and husband Mitchell Hamic of Chicago, Ill. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He also leaves a sister and brother-in-law; Linda (Sauve) Vesterfelt and her husband Bill, of Burt. Funeral service will take place on Tuesday November 26, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. at the Reitz Herzberg Funeral Home, 1550 S. Midland Road. Entombment followed at the Oakwood Memorial Mausoleum at 5950 Gratiot Road. Family and friends are welcome to visit at the funeral home on Monday, November 25, 2013 from 3:00-8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday one hour before the service.
