Castaneda Sr., George Menchaca, Saginaw, Michigan


Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at St. Mary’s of Michigan Medical Center. Age 86 years. Son of the late Manuel and Maria Antonia (Menchaca) Castaneda, George was born July 27, 1927 in Dallas, Texas. He was a Korean War Airborne Veteran who served in the U.S. Army and received the Purple Heart. George married Gregoria E. Zapata, his loving wife of 60 years, on January 10, 1953. She survives him. George was employed as a skilled tradesman at G.M. Mallable Iron for 49 years. He was a member of Cornerstone Christian Center, Purple Heart Association, American Legion, D.A.V and V.F.W. George enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming and working on equipment. Surviving besides his wife Gregoria are six daughters and two sons, Daniel Castaneda, Yolanda and Rudy Flores, Mary and Michael Gonzales, George Castaneda Jr. , Diana and Kevin Holt, Margo and Marty Wazbinski, Rosemary and James Konieczka, Elizabeth and Ridley Nimmo; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Minerva Pina; one brother, Gilbert and Mary Castaneda; numerous nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by a great-grandson Beckman James Armola and his brother, Pete Salazar. Funeral Service will take place on Friday, December 6, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Cornerstone Christian Center, 6674 Junction Road, Bridgeport. Pastor Kim Frank will officiate. Burial will take place in Spaulding Township Cemetery with Military Services conducted by the American G.I. Forum. Friends may call at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Road (between Shattuck and McCarty), where the family will be present on Thursday from 3:00-8:00 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service. A Service of Sharing will take place at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
