Wirt, Jack, Bay City, Michigan

Died in Bay City on May 19, 2012. Age 95 years. Jack was born to the late Abraham and Ida Wirtenstein, April 6, 1917 in Buffalo, New York, grew up in Detroit and moved to Bay City in 1941 when he married Alice Karse who survives him. Jack’s humble beginnings began with a dump truck and a lot of guts as he grew his business founding The Wirt Stone Docks, Sand and Stone, and Michigan/US Ash. Jack’s philosophy, along with his wife Alice’s was to give back to his community through significant philanthropy, to Temple Israel, The Library and the Women’s Center - as well as a countless number of service and charitable organizations – He was a member of Temple Beth Israel in Bay City, and a strong supporter of Lake Huron Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bay County, and the United Way of Bay County, to name a few. Jack, along with Alice, believed in and supported health and education, helping generously with Bay Medical Center and scholarships for our local Delta College and Saginaw Valley University. His strong Jewish faith spurred him on to support many projects worldwide. One of Jack’s greatest pleasures in life, other than his family and friends, was golf. In golf you can get a mulligan, which gives you another chance. In life, you get only one shot at it and he made the best of that one shot. Surviving Jack: his wife Alice, his children; Helen (Wirt) and Robert Lee, Stephen and Dena Wirt, Douglas Wirt and his special friend Victoria MacKenzie, his grandchildren; Michelle (Lee) and Douglas Wexler, Joshua and Irene Sheynman-Lee, Daniel Wirt, and Liza Wirt, his great grand children; Natalie and Zachrey Wexler, and his sister, Dubby Surath. He was preceded in death by his grandson; Matthew Wirt, his brothers and sisters: Irving Wirt, Aaron Wirt, Louise Zagerman, Sarah Faber, and Bessie Steinborn. The Wirt family would like to thank all the wonderful caregivers that have helped ease the way. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Temple Beth Israel, 2300 Center Ave., Bay City. Rabbi David Nelson will preside. Burial will follow at the Bay City Jewish Community Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to the Bay County Women’s Center or the Alice and Jack Wirt Library. www.steelefuneraldirectors.com
