Wendland, Joan Smith, Bay City, MI, Formerly of, Michigan


Beloved mother and grandmother passed away Monday evening, October 29, 2012, at the Cartwright Hospice Residence. Age 81 years. Joan Smith was born September 23, 1931 in Saginaw, the only child of the late James H. and Frances (Mills) Smith. She graduated from Arthur Hill High School Class of 1949 and then from Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri, and Mosher Business School, Chicago, Illinois. She married Richard J. Wendland on January 8, 1955; he preceded her in death on March 17, 1970. Joan was a member of St. Johnís Episcopal Church, Saginaw. Joan was employed as a field director of the Girl Scouts for 8 years. She was an active member of the Bay City Garden Club, Bay Medical Foundation (Emeritus), the Assistance League of Saginaw, Covenant Health Care Center Auxiliary, and a member and Past-President of the East-Central District of Michigan Association of Hospital Auxiliaries. She was also a member of the Tuesday Book Club, a sustaining member of the Junior League of Saginaw Valley and its Garden Club V. She was an Advanced Master Gardener. Joan loved fly-fishing on the North Branch of the AuSable River. She was also a charter member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Center, SVSU. Surviving are her children and their spouses, Richard J. Wendland, Jr. (Claudia), Sugar Land, Texas, Susan W. Spaulding (Keith), Frankenmuth, and James S. Wendland (Laurissa), Harbor Springs; grandchildren Lander Elizabeth Wendland, Amanda Bethany Morrill, Kelsey Lauren Spaulding, Emily AnneSpaulding, James Smith Wendland Jr. and Peter Gallagher Wendland. Funeral/Memorial service will take place on Saturday, November 3, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Johnís Episcopal Church, 123 N. Michigan Ave. The Rev. Daniel Cannon will officiate. There will be no visitation prior to the service. Friends may visit with the family after the service.
