Torres, Aurelia Medina, Saginaw, Michigan

Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and sister, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2012, at the Cartwright Care Center. Age 92 years. Aurelia Medina was born September 25, 1919, in Seguin, Texas, the daughter of the late Domingo and Paula (Martinez) Medina. She married Julio V. Torres on April 26, 1942; he predeceased her on November 27, 1970. She was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She was an avid gardener who maintained a yard full of flowers and vegetables late into her life. She was an extraordinary cook who honed her skills feeding a large, extended family and would often wake before sunrise to prepare tacos for the plant workers. She was never one to pass up a game of bingo or dominos. She enjoyed spending time with her family and going to church. She also enjoyed music, especially Christmas carols at family Christmas parties, where she would ask the children and grandchildren to sing. Born the daughter of a cotton sharecropper, her dedication to hard work, family and her love of life stayed with her until the end. Surviving are ten children and their spouses: Josephine and Guadalupe Silva, Richard and Lois Torres, Ramon and Diane Torres, Mary Ann Fulgencio, Esther and Ken Harris, all of Saginaw; Martha and Juan Cadena, Oak Leaf, Texas; Carlos Torres and Rafael Torres, both of Saginaw; Eliza “Maria” Hesse, St. Charles; Cruz Alberto Torres, Saginaw; 26 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; one brother, Emilio and Melva Medina, and five sisters, Carmen Gutierrez, Cruz Leal, Celia and Carlos De La Cruz, Tomasa Weitzel and Mary Caro; many nieces, nephews and their families. Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two daughters, Paula Torres and Minerva Hales; one son-in-law, Joe Hesse; one grandson, Manuel Cadena; and one sister, Bernice Nieto. Funeral Liturgy will take place on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 4735 W. Michigan Ave. Rev. Fr. John Johnson will officiate with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Her family will receive friends at the W. L. Case & Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Road, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, where a vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Family and friends may then meet at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
