Tafel, John L., Saginaw, Michigan

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle passed away Saturday June 2, 2012. John was born February 7, 1935 in Saginaw to the late Louis and Flossie Tafel. As a 1953 Saginaw High School graduate, he later worked as a meat cutter at Kolleth's Market and later at Paul Bunyan Meats. He enjoyed serving his community and was on the Buena Vista School Board from 1966 to 1986, serving as secretary, treasurer and president. John was also a charter member of the Buena Vista Booster Club. He was baptized in 1945 at First Christian Church, where he served as a deacon, an elder, and chairman of the board. John was a member of Masonic Lodge #77 where he served as Worshipful Master in 1978. He was a 50-year member of the lodge and a lifetime member of the Bay City Consistory. John was a member of the 20 & 21 Degree Teams, and Past Masters Club play cast. He joined Community of Christ Church in 2009. Leaving to cherish his memory are his wife of 55 years Carol K. (Rinehart); two sons John C. (Berta) Tafel, Flint, and Laurence C. (Cathy) Tafel, Saginaw; a daughter Kay A. Tafel, Saginaw; five grandchildren, Sara, Brett, and Elliott Tafel, and Eddy and Anthony Lambert; five great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a sister Martha Brown, WA; a brother-in-law Delbert (Ruth) Rinehart, WA. John was predeceased by his granddaughter November Tafel. Funeral service will take place on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Reitz Herzberg Funeral Home, 1550 S. Midland Road (S-M47). Pastor Guy Bennett will officiate. Friends and family will gather at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-7:30 p.m., where a Masonic Service will follow at 7:30 p.m. Memorial offerings are suggested to Masonic Pathways of Alma, or Community of Christ Church. www.reitzherzberg.com
