Scaife, Arthur James, Bridgeport, Michigan


Passed away January 23, 2012. Age 96 years. He was born July 13, 1915 in Bay City, Michigan, the son of the late Edwin A. and Annie (Bedford) Scaife. He married Ruth L. Rhyan in 1941. She predeceased him in 2002. He graduated from Battle Creek Central High School and Officer Candidate Military School. He studied engineering via I.C.S and other local school short courses. He was employed in the Engineering Departments for Wickes Boiler Co., Hughes Aircraft Co. of California, and Saginaw Steering Gear Div. of General Motors Corp. He was a life member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and a life member of the Bridgeport Masonic Lodge # 258 F. & A.M. Arthur was an active member of the Bridgeport Community Church since 1937, serving as a Trustee, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent. He was President of the youth group and then he sponsored the group for 8 years. He was very active in Boy Scout and Explorer activities. He was honored with membership in the “Order of the Arrow” and the “Order of George.” He also received the council highest award, “The Silver Beaver.” Arthur served in World War II., in Europe from D-day thru V-E Day as asst C.O. of HQ Battery of the 987th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Army. He was promoted to 1st Lt. in Germany. He was awarded the Silver Star for participating in 5 major battles, a Bronze Star for heroic and meritorious service, an Oak Leaf Cluster from the Belgium Government for spearheading liberating activities during the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the Reserve Officers Assoc. until 1951. Arthur served several years as a member of the Bridgeport Planning Commission, of which, he was a charter member. His hobbies included fishing, down-hill skiing, ice-skating, ice-boating, camping, carving and wood working. Surviving are one son, William and his wife, Barbara; three grandchildren, Jodi, Derek, and Lauren, all of Austin, Texas. He was predeceased by nine brothers and sisters. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Bridgeport Community Church, 3821State St., Bridgeport, MI 48722. Rev. Ronald Sinclair will officiate with Military burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport, under the auspice of Birch Run V.F.W. Post # 7542. Friends may call at the W. L. Case and Co. Funeral Chapel, 5700 Dixie Hwy, from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Friday and then at the Church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider the American Red Cross Great Lakes Bay Chapter Disaster Relief Fund, 228 Washington Ave., Bay City, MI. 48708, Bridgeport Community Church or a charity of their choice.
