Rockwell, Mary Bauer, Saginaw, Michigan


Died on August 22, 2012 at Saginaw's Covenant Harrison Hospital. Age 78 years. She was born in Saginaw on April 13, 1934, the only child of Isabel and Clarence "Gex" Bauer. She was also blessed with a loving uncle, Charles Maynard. She graduated from Arthur Hill High School and the University of Michigan, as an undergraduate, she joined Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and was chosen to represent the University on Mademoiselle Magazine's Collegiate Board. She was among 700 chosen from more than 4000 students from across the nation. After graduation, she taught 5th grade at Durand School for two years. On September 20, 1958, she was married to Hiel M. Rockwell, Jr. He survives her. Also surviving are the couple's children: Sarah (Dr. John) Walgast of Fort Collins, Colorado and Peter (Rebecca) of Bloomfield Hills. Peter is currently working in Afghanistan. Mary took particular delight in her grandchildren: Emily and John Walgast and Charlotte, Madeleine and Richard Rockwell. Always active in civic affairs, Mary was a member of the Junior League and was the recipient of its Gold Rose Award for community service. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the DAR, of which she was a lifelong member and officer. She was often called upon to serve local organizations in an executive position, starting with the presidency of the Lewis Cass Society of the Children of the American Revolution, to which she was elected when she was 14. She was also president of the Saginaw Community Concert Association, the Saginaw Valley Child Guidance Clinic Auxiliary, the Administrative Board of Directors of the Norman Westlund Child Guidance Clinic, the Saginaw Branch of the Women's National Farm and Garden Association and the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Saginaw. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 121 S. Harrison St. (at Court Street). Dr. Robert L. Emrich will officiate with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will meet friends at the W. L. Case and Co. Funeral Directors, 4480 Mackinaw Road, Monday, August 27, 2012 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. and then on Tuesday at the church Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service.
