Nagel, Esther Florence Potts Whitten, Traverse City, Michigan

Esther, 95, passed away June 6, 2012. Esther, a loving mother and grandmother, was born in 1916, the fourth of six children, in the farmhouse where she grew up, to Grace and Clyde Potts. During her youth on the farm, her family would “throw another potato in the pot” in order to feed the hungry men who slept in the barn during the Depression. Her family was one with a big heart, even though they couldn’t afford much. She attended school in a one-room schoolhouse through the 8th grade then became a mother’s helper to finish high school with honors in Saginaw. A family of big hearts for what they could afford. She always helped her relatives in need and as a homemaker in Saginaw she loved being surrounded by family and friends. She said, “I was blessed to have two good husbands.” She is survived by her children Bruce Whitten (Patty) of Idaho, Sharon Porter Webster of Traverse City, Suzanne (Dewey) Provoast of Hale, step children Wally Nagel (Liz), and Chuck Nagel (Florence) of Saginaw, many nieces and nephews, 10 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren, 2 great great-grandchildren and sisters Virginia Wrege of Saginaw and Mary Potts of Frankenmuth. She was preceded in death by her husbands Arthur Whitten in 1969 and Walter Nagel in 2000 and siblings Bill Potts, Don Potts, Marrietta Whitten and Irene Kulvander. Funeral service will take place on Monday, June 11, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at W. L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Road. Rev. Pamela Renna will officiate with burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 a.m. Monday until the time of the service.
