McVannel, Lulu E. (Near), Hemlock, Michigan

Passed away Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 102. She was born Oct. 28, 1909 in Burt, Michigan to Rosa (Brown) Near and William George Near. She was married to Warnie McVannel in 1927 in Saginaw, Michigan. They were married for 56 years before Warnie passed away. Lulu lived in Bridgeport and moved to Merrill in 1948 where she lived for 50 years and then moved to Hemlock in 1998. Lulu was an excellent gardener and flower grower. She followed the 4-H and FFA activities of her children. Lulu was an expert drapery maker and worked for Markey Elliot in Saginaw for many years, drafting detailed patterns for unique windows. Lulu enjoyed playing cards at the Merrill Senior Center with Warnie and her friends and then in Hemlock with her special friends Vlasta, Shirley and Walter in her home. She is survived by her children Lillian (Ralph) Klawitter of Missoula, Montana, Donald (Connie) McVannel of Hemlock and Gerald (Beverly) of Perrinton, 19 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, and 19 great great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her husband Warnie, sons Kenneth and Peter, daughter Betty, and eight sisters and three brothers. The family would like to thank Bunny, Maria, and Susan for their special care of mom over the past few months and Hospice of Michigan care givers Chaplain Larry, Nicole, Shannon, Sharon, Tracy, and Dr. Morrone. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the W. L. Case & Company, Funeral Home in Merrill, Michigan. Lulu's grandson, Rev. Jeff McVannel will officiate with Rev. Richard Gossett with burial at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, April 24 at the Funeral Home from 1:00-8:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. Wednesday until time of service.
