Hanson, Ila Mae, Saginaw, Michigan


Ila Welch Hanson, born July 22, 1916 in Frederic, Michigan, the daughter of Edward and Della (Crawford) Welch. She married Waldemar Hanson of Grayling, Michigan in 1939, moved to Saginaw in 1940 where she and her husband maintained a foster care home for teen age children for 12 years. He predeceased her April 5, 1982. She loved doing volunteer work and did so at the American Red Cross, St. Mary’s Hospital, the Veteran’s Hospital, Hoyt Nursing Home and Community Village. She accompanied many volunteer mission work trips to New Mexico, Arizona, Navaho Indian Reservations and Hulbert in the Upper Peninsula. Ila was an active member of Jefferson Ave. United Methodist Church and its women’s organization, serving as local President of the U.M.W., the Saginaw Bay District President and a member of the Detroit Conference Nominating Committee. She was honored in 1987 by Church Women United as the Church Woman of the Year in Saginaw County. Ila earned a Home Care Certificate from Delta College and worked as a caregiver for elderly people. She retired from the V.F.W. National Children’s Home in Eaton Rapids as a house mother. Surviving are four children and their spouses, Michael and Pat Hanson, Brad and Ele Hanson, Rev. Dr. Alan and Judy Hanson, Birdie and Neil Sisco; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Carolyn and Bill Middleton, Flint; many nieces and nephews. Honoring Mrs. Hanson’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Ames United Methodist Church, 801 State St. in Saginaw. Rev. Mark Karls will officiate. Friends may call at Ames United Methodist Church where the family will be present on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. A private graveside committal service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Frederic, Michigan. Those who so desire may make a gift in Ila’s memory to St. Francis Home, Ames United Methodist Women’s Group or Wyandotte First United Methodist Church.
