Broughton, Karen Lynn, St. Charles, Michigan

Passed away Sunday, May 27, 2012 at Select Specialty Care, after a three year battle with various illnesses. Age 65 years. Karen was born in Saginaw, Michigan December 21, 1946 the daughter of the late Vincent Emerson and Madelyn Marie (Wiegand) Smith. Later her mother married George Thick, who raised Karen from the age of three. Karen married Jack Broughton July 3, 1965 and he survives her. Karen was primarily a homemaker, but she worked for a time at Show World Video in Shields and enjoyed her time there very much. Through the generosity of her sister, Amy, who donated a kidney to Karen, she enjoyed twelve more years of life than was expected. As a youth, she attended Broadway Avenue Methodist Church and later occasionally attended Trinity Baptist Church in St. Charles. She loved to go fishing with her kids when they were young and she carried that love over to her grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Jack, Karen is survived by her daughter, Anna (Doug) Goka; her son, Jeffrey (Sasha Leville) Broughton; five grandchildren, Tyler, Jacob, Kelsey, Maurice and Madelyn; her adopted granddaughter, Michele; four step-grandchildren, Arianna, Amber, Miranda and Keagan; three siblings, Fred (Shirley) Smith, Amy (Bill) Ward and Gus (Vickie) Thick; a step-sister, Judi (Russell) Gray; three sisters-in-law, Janet Izzo, Carol Broughton and Barbara (Vernon) Snelenberger; a former brother-in-law, Frank Izzo; her mother-in-law, Irene Broughton; several nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by several special friends, Lynn Ratkos, Barb Wiegandt, Eleanor and Walter Ruzowski and family, Connie Page, Mike and Sue Burkey. She was predeceased by her step-brother, Jerry (Judy) Thick and her father-in-law, Lee Broughton. The funeral service will take place on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at W. L. Case & Company, 201 N. Miller Road. Rev. Jeffrey Williams will officiate with burial in Garfield Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family at the chapel on Wednesday from 2:00-8:00 p.m. and on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service.
