Behme MD, Claus Peter, Saginaw, Michigan

Beloved husband, brother, father, uncle, grandfather and physician, passed away on October 21, 2012 following a long illness at the age of 84. He was born in Leipzig, Germany on March 10, 1928, the son of Dr. Max and Charlotte (Zergiebel) Behme. He obtained his Medical Doctor degree from Heidelberg University in 1953 and then traveled to the United States to begin his medical internship at Elizabeth General Hospital in NJ the following year. It was there that he met the love of his life, Carol L. Gillespie, a Registered Nurse. They were married on April 1, 1956. After completing his medical residencies in New York and Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Dr. Behme began his private practice of Internal Medicine in Saginaw, Michigan in 1962. He served as the Chief of Medicine at St. Luke’s Hospital where he was also a member of the Executive Committee. In 2000 he was presented with the Distinguished Physician Award from the Saginaw Medical Society for his service at St. Luke’s Hospital (now Covenant). He retired from medicine in 1996 – much to the dismay of many of his patients who enjoyed the twinkle in his eye and his medical words of wisdom. Upon his retirement, Dr. Behme enjoyed reading, correspondence, listening to his extensive collection of classical music and travel. He was deeply passionate about many things: Mozart, Beethovan, Bach, books, politics, history, art, his patients, dear friends, the Detroit Tigers, good grammar and proper etiquette. But that was far surpassed by his love of home and family. He "only came to America for an internship" but stayed to become a father of six children whom he loved without reserve. The title he was most proud of was: "Dad". In addition to his wife of 56 years, Carol, he is survived by his six children Caryl (William) Heard, Hoboken, NJ; Christopher (Anita) Behme, Jamestown NC; Kathleen (Thomas) Frank, Naperville, IL; Michael (Susan) Behme, Pittsburgh PA; Colleen (Jeffrey) Smith, Saginaw, MI; Jennifer (Brian) King, Springfield, MO; and his 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by his only sibling, Lotte Lore (Gunter) Herz of Bochum, Germany, and his nephew, Peter Herz and niece, Dr. Andrea Herz, also of Germany. Honoring Dr. Behme’s wishes cremation has taken place. A Celebration of His Life will take place on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Road (between Shattuck and McCarty). Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 2:00-8:00 p.m. Because of Dr. Behme’s love of reading and classical music, memorial donations may be considered for The Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra, 201 N. Washington Ave., Saginaw, MI 48607 or for the Saginaw Public Libraries Foundation at http://www.saginawlibrary.org/your-library/donations-giving/. www.snowfuneralhome.net
