Mitchell, Katherine M., Saginaw, Michigan

Passed away January 22, 2011, at Luther Manor. Age 84 years. Katherine Mitchell was born August 14, 1926, in New Haven, Connecticut, to the late Raymond and Fleta Gonso. She married Earl L. Mitchell on December 28, 1950, and he predeceased her in 2003. She was a graduate of Michigan State University, receiving her Masters of Arts degree. Katherine was skilled in acrylic, watercolor, and oil painting; printmaking, ceramics, metal sculpture, and woodcarving. She designed the Waterfowl Observatory in St. Charles and eight panels for the Carousel at the Children’s Zoo. Katherine exhibited her work at the Saginaw Art Museum, Studio 23, the Midland Center for the Arts, the Flint Institute, and statewide shows, winning many awards. She taught privately and at the Art Museum and Delta College. She was a charter member of Countryside Trinity Church. Surviving are a daughter Marie Mitchell and her spouse Duane Essenmacher, a son Robert Mitchell and his spouse Amy, and two grandchildren, Sasha and Jeremy Mitchell. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 26, 2011, at Countryside Trinity Church, 4690 Weiss. Rev. Kenneth Parker will officiate with burial at Garfield Cemetery in Swan Creek Township. Friends may call at the W.L. Case Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Road, on Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and at the Church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
