McGill Jr., John A., Saginaw, Michigan

John A. McGill Jr., age 74, of Saginaw Township, Michigan, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully Thursday, May 19, 2011 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 24, 1936 in Hudson, Michigan, to John A. Sr. and Ella Dee (Rollings) McGill. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1954 and then served in the U.S. Army. He was a graduate of Michigan State University where he met his wife, Donna (Lossing). They were married on June 21, 1958. She survives him. John was employed by the Famers and Manufacturers Beet Sugar Association for 10 years and then spent 30 years as Executive Vice-President and Treasurer of the Michigan Bean Shippers Association. During his career, he traveled extensively. He was known to his colleagues around the world as “Mr. Bean”. He was active for many years at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Boy Scouts of America, Germania Town & Country Club and numerous other organizations. John found a spiritual connection in nature and in the outdoors where he farmed, cut firewood, hunted, fished, mushroomed, played tennis and golfed. He was an avid reader, duck carver, backgammon player and a man with a keen sense of humor. He took great pride in his Scottish-Irish heritage. He especially enjoyed Ireland and Scotland, interacting with the people and observing the cultures of both countries. He will be missed by Donna, his loving wife of nearly 53 years, their sons, Michael Anthony and Lynn Ann McGill, Golden, Colorado; Marc Andrew and Michelle McGill, Saginaw; eight beautiful grandchildren called him grandpa, Samantha and Sean McGill, Golden, Colorado; Jennifer McGill, East Lansing; Rachel and Courtney McInerney, Saginaw; Marcus Newvine, Saginaw; Julie Burris, Riverview, Florida; Kimberly (Drew) Garno, Tampa, Florida; a sister, Betty (Edward) Malarney, Pepper Pike, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Suzette McGill, El Paso, Texas; a brother-in-law, Donald (Linda) Lossing, Wheat Ridge, Colorado; several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. His son, Bennett John McGill, and his brother, Richard Albert McGill, preceded John in death. The McGill family extends their sincere gratitude and deep appreciation to our dear friends and V.N.A./Hospice who supported John during his illness. Honoring John’s wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Road (between Shattuck and McCarty). Pastor Edward Abbott will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
