Hammerbacher, Herbert Otto Ernst, Au Gres, Michigan

Passed away at his home on Monday, December 26, 2011, surrounded by his family. Age 77 years. Herbert Otto Ernst Hammerbacher was born January 30, 1934, in Kochville Township, to the late Adolph and Martha (Engelhardt) Hammerbacher. He married Jane Swan on September 24, 1960; she survives him. Their children are David (Kristine), Velda (William Millar) and Joyce (Gregory Gendron). An infant son, Kurt Matthew, predeceased him in 1966. He also leaves grandchildren, Anthony, Eric and Maris Gendron, Jessica and Alex Frink; one great-granddaughter, Kyleigh Dennison; sisters, Selma Reinbold, his twin, Helen (Kenneth) Klammer, and Lorna Behmlander; a brother-in-law, Alvin Appold; many nieces, nephews and their families; and many dear friends. He was also predeceased by a sister, Verna Appold, and by two brothers-in-law, Alvin Behmlander and Harold Reinbold. He retired from General Motors Saginaw Steering Gear, after 38 ½ years of service. He was then employed part-time by Monitor Sugar. Herb had a special interest in restoring antique John Deere tractors. He was known by his friends in Au Gres for supplying them with many “Tuesday Treasures.” He enjoyed feeding birds and was an accomplished animal trapper. He and Jane enjoyed many trips on several Great Lakes freighters with their son-in-law. Herb was a life-long member of St. John Lutheran Church, Amelith, and was an associate member of St. John Lutheran Church, Au Gres. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Amelith, 1704 Amelith Road, Bay City, where his family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, and then on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Pastor Stephen P. Starke and Pastor Frederick T. Cordts will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Sandy Cay, Inc.
