Grills, Robert James, Saginaw, Michigan

Passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at the Cartwright Residence. Age 81 years. The son of the late Edna (Beebe) and James W. Grills was born September 9, 1929 in Flint, Michigan. He was a graduate of Flint Central High School where he was Michigan State Debate Champion his senior year. Robert received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Michigan, School of Business. He married Elizabeth Ann Emery Spence, October 27, 1978. She survives him. He began his career with sixteen years of service to General Motors. In 1967 he joined Merrill-Lynch, retiring as a Vice President and a Certified Financial Planner, in 1993 with twenty-six years of service. Robert served with the U. S. Army during the Korean War, was of the Presbyterian faith, and a member the Genesee Lodge #175, F. & A.M and the Bay City Consistory. He was active with and had served as President of Pit and Balcony. Robert was an avid golfer and life member of Germania. Surviving besides his wife are three children and their spouses, Laura and Peter Giannone, Hastings- on- Hudson, NY; James F. and Linda Grills; Robert J. Grills, all of Saginaw, MI; three grandchildren, Patrick O’Connor, James O’Connor, Margaret O’Connor; two step-children, James Spence III, League City, Texas; Lynn Spence Sullivan and her husband, George, Grand Rapids, MI; A step-granddaughter, Emily Elizabeth Sullivan. A daughter, Linda Grills, and a sister Jane Richards have predeceased him. In accordance with Mr. Grills wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial services will take place on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at the W. L. Case & Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Road, where his family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. Wednesday until the time of funeral service. Rev. Dr. Robert L. Emrich will officiate.
