Fritz, George Frederick (Harold), Traverse City, Michigan

Passed away on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011 at his home at the age of 89 years. George was born on Sept. 23, 1922, in Saginaw, the son of Erich and Catherine (Weber) Fritz. In June of 1942 in Saginaw he married Gladys M. Rupp who preceded him in death. George joined the Civilian Conservation Corps program as a young man and later enlisted into the US Army in 1942. George was stationed in England and France with the Company I, 3rd Battalion. After serving George returned home and worked for General Motors for seven years before joining his brothers, Elmer and John, in starting Fritz Brothers Floor Covering in Saginaw where he worked until his retirement. After his retirement George worked part time at Redeemer Lutheran Church. In its beginnings George was an active part of the start up of Countryside Presbyterian Church in Saginaw and served as its President in its early days. George moved to Traverse City in 2001, where he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, watching the Detroit Tigers and leading the menís club at The Village at Bay Ridge. George is survived by his children, Timothy G. (Natalie) Fritz of Suttons Bay and Suzanne Kostick of Rio Rancho, NM; grandchildren, Blaine, Mitchell, and Grace; sisters, Harriet, Ruth, and Margaret; brother, John; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Gladys, George was preceded in death by his brothers, Arthur, Elmer, Charles (Al), Walter, Edward and sisters Ester, Louise, and Eleanor. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 2 at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Roselawn Memorial Gardens (Gratiot and Center Roads) in Saginaw. A memorial service was also held in Traverse City on Thursday, December 1. Those wishing to make a donation may consider First Congregational Church designated to Traverse City Message and Music or the Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging. Arrangements are with the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.
