Our precious Mom is home in heaven, safe in the arms of Jesus. Arlene Elizabeth Borchard was born in Saginaw, Michigan December 20, 1912, the eldest of 8 siblings born to the late Fred W. and Wanda (Gehrls) Borchard. She passed away Thursday, March 10, 2011 at St. Mary’s of Michigan, after living two years at Hoyt Nursing & Rehab Centre. She lived her entire life in service to her Lord and her family. She showed us how to live and she showed us how to die. Arlene was baptized, confirmed and married at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Court & Bond. She graduated from St. Paul’s Lutheran School, AHHS in 1929 and the Saginaw Business Institute. She worked at the Receivership Peoples & American State Bank before she married. Later, she enjoyed working for many years at the Klement Press. Arlene married Pastor Hilmar Eckert September 14, 1940. He predeceased her in October, 1962. Arlene was an active and faithful member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church on Gratiot for 70 years. She is currently a member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church on Brockway. Arlene was quick to smile and a joy to be with. She touched many lives with her gentle and humble spirit and possessed a quick sense of humor. She treasured her immediate and extended family. She enjoyed animals (especially Augie), reading, working crossword puzzles, music, sewing, rocking babies and baking cookies. Arlene is survived by four children, Ruth (Roy) Elie, Lois (Larry) Owen, Pastor Alan (Judy) Eckert and Pastor David (Brenda) Eckert; five grandchildren, Tonya Chapin, Lew Chapin, Shannon Schmidt, Erin Hahnke and Kristen Bendix; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Lenore Zehnder, Bay City and Barbara Borchard, Frankenmuth; special cousins, Ruth and Augie Klement; many special nieces and nephews who visited and cared for her till the end. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Eckert; all her siblings, Fred J., Donald, Robert, William, Raymond and infant brother, John Borchard, as well as her only sister, Marietta Weiker.
