Baukus, Donna Mae, (Col. Ret. USAFNC), Saginaw, Michigan

Loving sister and aunt passed away Saturday, February 5, 2011 at her home. Age 81 years. The daughter of the late Joseph and Mary A. (Pretzer) Baukus, Donna was born July 13, 1929 in Saginaw, Michigan. She graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1947. Donna then attended and graduated from C.M.U. and Henry Ford School of Nursing in 1953 with her B.S. in Nursing. She entered military service in 1957 as 1st Lieutenant in U.S.A.F.N.R. (after working at Henry Ford Hospital and the V.A. Hospital in Saginaw). Donna completed basic training and was assigned as OB nurse and charge of new born nursery at Lakeland AFB in Texas; in 1958, Philippines Charge of Pediatrics, new born nursery and orthopedics; in 1960, Sulfridge AFB Charge of dependents ward and psychiatric unit and took flight nurse training while serving at Sulfridge; in 1962, made Captain assigned to Louisiana Charge of surgical ward; from 1965-67, command nurse (Panama Canal Zone) of Southcom which handled mercy missions and Air Force evacuations of U.S. and foreign nationals, made Major medical team trips throughout Central and South America; Donna transferred to Pope Air Force Base in North Carolina as training officer for the 21st Aero Medical Evacuation Group (cross training and instructions for T.E.T. offensive); Donna transferred to Columbus, Mississippi as Chief Nurse of the hospital and made Lt. Colonel; in 1972, assigned to Myrtle Beach Chief Nurse teaching pre-natal classes for hospital and civilian community at request of local doctors; from 1972-1975, Philippines Chief Nurse at Clark AFB, 9th Aero Medical Group during operation “Baby lift” during the Vietnam War; from 1975-1978, Biloxi, Mississippi serving as Assistant Chief Nurse and medical supervisor at Biloxi AF Medical Center. Donna retired January 1, 1978, having earned the rank of Colonel. Surviving are one sister, Mary Ellen (John) Martuch, Onekema, Michigan; Donna’s nieces and nephews, John (Sheila) Martuch, Birmingham, Michigan; Thomas (Marjorie) Martuch, Augusta, Michigan; Ann (Jay) Brandt, Akron, Ohio; Paul (Susan) Martuch, Snohomish, Washington; many grand-nieces and grand-nephews; a beloved cousin, Marian Hughes. Funeral service will take place at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 10, 2011 at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Road (between Shattuck and McCarty). Interment will follow in St. Andrew Cemetery where military honors will be presented by V.F.W. Post #1859. Friends may call at the funeral home where the family will be present on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service.
