Passed away Friday, October 1, 2010, at his home. Age 84 years. John was born in Maple Grove, Michigan on December 14, 1925, the son of the late John A. and Matilda (Weinzierl) Wendling. John served in the US Army Infantry during World War II, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He married Betty June Guttridge on November 30, 1946; she predeceased him January 3, 2010. He retired from Chevrolet Service Parts Plant after over 40 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post #439. He was a member of Ames United Methodist Church and enjoyed attending with his loving wife Betty of 64 years. He enjoyed long walks and rides with his wife and just being together. They enjoyed their cottage at Sand Lake, Michigan. John helped his dad and brothers build homes and cottages and liked to keep track of his sons’ building projects. John is survived by four sons and their wives, William and Connie; James and Cathy; Kenneth and Vivian; John and Tammy; twelve grandchildren, Matthew (Jodie); Lindsay; Katelyn; Eric; Sean; Amanda (Mike); Laura (Michael); Carrie; Steven; Andrew; Ashley and Adam; nine great grandchildren, Paige, Jacob, Mason, Nickolas, Jordan, Anthony, Austin, Michael, and Easton; four sisters-in-law, Mary Wendling, Harriet Wendling, Florence (Dan) Alever and Shirley Fisher; many nieces, nephews and their families. He was predeceased by a grandson, John William; seven brothers, Cyril, Victor, Herbert, Harold, Andrew, Cletus, and Louis, and one sister, Marie. The funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at the W. L. Case and Co. Funeral Chapel, 201 N. Miller Road. Rev. Mark A. Karls will officiate with burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be under the auspices of American Legion Post #439.
