Slaggert, Mary Ellen, Saginaw, Michigan

Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, aunt and friend passed away Friday, April 16, 2010 into the arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ. She was the youngest and only remaining sibling of seven children. Born April 21, 1922 to the late Granvill Cecil Beeler and Matilda Norton Beeler of Middlesboro, Kentucky. Mary was married to William J. Slaggert who predeceased her June 17, 2001. From an early age, Mary was an avid and creative entrepreneur who used money wisely and could spot investment opportunities. She sold many products, including Grit magazine as a child. Her work ethic was exhibited during WW II when she worked as a classic Rosie the Riveter at the Saginaw Gun Plant. In later years, Mary was active in the real estate field and formed her own company, Slaggert Real Estate. She believed in education and earned the GRI and RAM designations from the University of Michigan. Always a pioneer, Mary achieved the status of becoming one of the very first female directors to serve on the Saginaw Board of Realtors. She worked tirelessly to promote and defend the term REALTOR. An astute businesswoman, Mary’s integrity and honesty in the real estate market gained her the respect and admiration of her peers as well as her clients and customers. She served on many committees within the Board and chaired several. Mary also was a past President of the Saginaw Chapter of the Women’s Council. After retiring from the real estate field, Mary became a crossing guard for Saginaw Township Schools, making many friends both young and old. She served in that capacity for 15 years. Mary had a firm belief in and commitment to helping others. Mary is survived by two children, Barbara (Cliff) Amrhein and David (Lynda) Slaggert, all of Saginaw; six grandchildren, John (Mary) Sonefeld, Durand, Michigan; Jennifer (Jim) Altensee, Fairborn, Ohio; Sue (Ken) Wahrman, Plainfield, Illinois; Martin Sonefeld, Saginaw; Jill (Jeff) Moore, Saginaw; Stacy Slaggert, Saginaw; 21 great- grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a dear sister-in-law, Ella Beeler, Kentucky; several nieces and nephews. Mary left her family a heritage through the gentle, ethical way she conducted her life and lived her faith. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 19, 2010 at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Road, (between Shattuck and McCarty). Rev. Mark Buckert will officiate with burial in St. Andrew Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home where the family will be present on Sunday from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. and on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Family and friends will share memories of Mary Ellen at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Salvation Army.
