Shoskey, Gerald James, Saginaw, Michigan

Shoskey, Gerald James, 94, ascended into heaven on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, in Harbor Spring, Michigan, after breaking his hip and contracting pneumonia. He was born on September 11, 1915, in Saginaw, Michigan. Gerald lived most of his abundant and fruitful life in Saginaw, Michigan, with his lovely and gracious wife, Elinore Marie (Hahn), until her death in 1986; they were married 45 years. He was also married to Barbara (Finch), from 1988 until her death in 2005, they resided in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Preceding him in death were his parents, Eva (Savage) and William Shoskey; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Katharine Shoskey; brother, Arthur Shoskey; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Al and Barb Hahn and Margaret and Hank Fawcett. He is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law: Sidney Ellyn and Glenn Helmkamp of South Bend, Indiana, and Paula Margaret and Ken Klintworth of Hixson, Tennessee; grandchildren: Matthew and Michelle Helmkamp, Granger, IN, Bradley and Karen Helmkamp, Elmhurst, IL, Nicholas and Debbie Helmkamp, Grand Rapids, MI, Teresa and Laythen Young, Turlock, CA, Paul Klintworth, Crofton, MD, and Caroline Klintworth, Chattanooga, TN; great-grandchildren: Mitchell, Alyson, Joey and Scott Helmkamp, Kyle, Christian, Clayton and Kassandra Helmkamp, Elizabeth, Benjamin, and Timmy Helmkamp; sister-in-law, June (Arthur, deceased) Shoskey of Freeland, MI; several nieces and nephews; Barbara’s children: Janice Kenner, Marsha Jordan, Norman, Jimmy and Tommy Finch; and special friend, Douglas Jack, all of Chattanooga. Gerald was a master tool and dye maker and a veteran of WW II. He served in the Navy. In his free time, he made jewelry for his wife and daughters from cats’ eye shells he found on the beach and melted down stainless steel from shell casings. He was a talented carpenter who built their lakeside cabin, with generous support from his many cousins and friends, and made the cabinets and most of the furniture, as well. He graduated from Arthur Hill High School and was a letterman in both baseball and basketball. He learned to play the very difficult concertina at an early age and joined his Father playing weddings and parties by the age of 12. He also played the clarinet. Over his life-time, Gerald was a member of Warren Avenue Presbyterian Church in Saginaw, MI; of Burk’s United Methodist Church in Hixson, TN; 1st Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga, TN; and of Trinity Evangelical Free Church in South Bend, IN. The Family will receive visitors at Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Road (off State), Saginaw, MI, on Sunday, August 1, 2010 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and on Monday, August 2, from 10:00 a.m. until Noon with the memorial service beginning at 12:15 p.m. Pallbearers will be grandchildren, Matt, Brad, Nick Helmkamp, Teresa Young, Paul Klintworth, and great grandchildren, Kyle and Mitchell Helmkamp. Interment will be at Roselawn Memorial Gardens immediately after the service, where Gerald will be laid to rest in eternal and everlasting peace with his lovely Elinore Marie.
