Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away Monday, September 27, 2010 at Luther Manor Nursing Home. Age 94 years. The daughter of the late Joseph and Anna (Hojdys) Kokes, Mary was born January 11, 1916 in Granger, Texas, coming to Michigan in 1935. She married Edward F. Shijka on October 1, 1938. He predeceased her December 25, 1965. Mary was employed at Delco Morraine for 10 years until her retirement in 1979 and was a member of U.A.W. Local #467. She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Cadillac and volunteered at Shepherds Table to feed the needy. Mary was a past member of St. George Catholic Church and its Altar Society and was active in making wreaths in the Men’s Club at Christmas time. Mary was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and the League of Catholic Women. Mary traveled all 50 states with her sisters and friends. Most of all, she enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting with the wonderful ladies of her craft club for over 62 years. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, James and Catherine Shijka, Saginaw; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Paveglio, Saginaw; four grandchildren, Steven Shijka and his fiancée, Patty Iwankovitsch, St. Johns; Stacey and Christopher Ottolini, Keego Harbor; Paul Shijka, Saginaw; Pam and Eric Jean, Suttons Bay; two step-grandchildren, Colleen and Brian Lillie and Kevin Paveglio, Traverse City; two great-granddaughters, Abigail and Arielle Jean; step-great-grandson, Brody Paveglio; three sisters, Emily Kusak, Agnes Vincik, Frances (Robert) Billings; many nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her son, Edward Shijka Jr., and by four brothers and two sisters, Eddie, John, Joseph and Frank Kokes, Annie McDonald and Vlasta White. Mary’s family extends their thanks and appreciation to St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and Luther Manor for the special care they gave to her. Funeral Liturgy will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 30, 2010 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Randy Kelly will officiate. Private interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Road, (between Shattuck and McCarty), where the family will be present on Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass. A Vigil Service, led by Sue Smith, will take place at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
