Passed away on Thursday, May 27, 2010, age 78, at Kindred Hospital in Tampa, Fla. Mr. Schmitt moved to Leesburg from Saginaw Township in 1995. In 1964, he founded the Saginaw Township Times, which later became known as The Township Times. He owned and operated the newspaper, an important part in the formative years of rapidly growing Saginaw Township. First started as a biweekly, it quickly began publishing weekly. Mr. Schmitt was also elected twice as Supervisor of Saginaw Township in the late 1970’s and early 80’s. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Beverly J. Schmitt, daughter Karen Schmitt Losee of Lake Orion, Mich., and son Rudolf James Schmitt and his wife Shari Lyn Schmitt of Clermont, Fla. He has seven grandchildren: Nicole Pike and Jillian, Zaakory, Reed and Drew Losee as well as Kristi and Shannon Schmitt. He is predeceased by brother William Randolph Schmitt and sister Mildred Ruth Heasley. A memorial service will take place 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 8th, 2010 at W. L. Case & Company, 4480 Mackinaw Road. Rev. Ken Parker will officiate with burial of ashes in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit with the family from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service.
