Schmidt, John, Saginaw, Michigan

On Saturday, May 15, 2010, our heavenly Father chose to call his faithful servant to his heavenly home at the age of 96 years. John was born May 19, 1914, in Bay Port, MI. He married Eunice E. Seale on November 18, 1944 and she preceded him in death on September 24, 1994. John served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Pops loved to golf, bowl and play cards with his children and grandchildren (especially their favorite card game they called “Schmidt”). In his later years he could be found walking at the Centre Courts walking track because after all if you don’t use it you lose it. He is survived by his children, John T. (Kay) Schmidt, Ronald A. Schmidt, Nancy M. (Tim) Iles, Eunice E. (Roland) Bergey; a special daughter-in-law, Gwen Schmidt, brothers, George and Frederick “Fritz” Schmidt; 13 grandchildren, Staff Sgt. Trevor Schmidt, Erin (Jake) Skehan, Allison (Eric) Groh, Sheri (Nathan) deGuia, David (Mary) Schmidt, Ryan, Marley and Joshua Schmidt, Jodi, Sarah (fiancé Sean) and Timothy Jr. Iles, Jonathan Fritz, Janene (Matt) McMahon; and 4 great-grandchildren, Ethan, Brady and Jackson Groh and Clare McMahon. Besides his wife he was predeceased by a son Gerald “Jerry” Schmidt; a special daughter-in-law, Dawn; two brothers, Martin and Peter Schmidt; and one sister Elizabeth Brown Smith. Funeral services will take place at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Court and Bond Streets. Rev. Carl T. Otto will officiate with burial to follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at W.L. Case & Company 4480 Mackinaw Road on Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 and again at the church on Wednesday from 12:00 noon until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a donation to St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church.
