Nickodemus, John Herman, Saginaw, Michigan

Beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away on Monday March 22, 2010, at his home. Age 72 years. Son of the late John Peter and Katharine Nickodemus, John was born June 5, 1937 in Saginaw, Michigan. On October 22, 1960, he married the love of his life, Rose Marie “Rosie” Mudd at St. Mary Cathedral. She survives him. John was a 1955 graduate of St. Mary Cathedral and a 1959 graduate of the University of Notre Dame. In 1974, he received a Master’s Degree in Business from Central Michigan University. He was a military veteran, serving six years in the Army National Guard. John spent his entire working life with John H. Nickodemus and Sons, Inc., a local petroleum marketing firm founded by his grandfather, and from which he retired in 1998. He was a past-president of the Saginaw Valley Oil Men’s Club, a former member of the Michigan Petroleum Association and a recipient of the MPA’s Pioneer Award. John was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church. He was a past-president of the St. Stephen Parish Council and served the parish in many ministries. He coached seventh and eighth grade basketball for St. Andrew and St. Stephen schools for many years. He enjoyed the game of golf, including annual golf trips to Myrtle Beach, playing in the Pioneer Club golf league and in the Wednesday morning Seniors ’ League. He was an avid Notre Dame football fan. He took great pleasure in attending ND football games and ND class reunions. The joy of his life was time spent with his family. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons and four daughters and their spouses: Bridget (Greg) McKewan, Eden Prairie, MN; Lucy (James) Galus, Saginaw, MI; Mary “Luz” (Doug) Heilig, Oak Park, MI; John (Jane) Nickodemus, Newburyport, MA; Rosemarie (Pete) Hilliard, Satellite Beach, FL; and Paul (Kristin) Nickodemus, Ann Arbor, MI. Also surviving are fifteen grandchildren: Alexandra and William McKewan; James, Anne Marie, Joe, and Sarah Galus; Erica (Scott) Kring; Jacob Heilig; John, Kate and Ellen Nickodemus; Keeley Hilliard; Ben, Lainey and Megan Nickodemus. He is survived by three sisters and one brother: Pat Tessin and Mary Hemmer, Saginaw; Tom (Kathy) Nickodemus, Las Cruces, NM; Rosemary Curtin, Neenah, WI; as well as sisters-in-law Mary McHale and Stella (George) Thelen, and brother-in-law Tom (Evelyn) Mudd, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Amy Dolores, and by sisters: Anne David and Jane Williams. John’s funeral liturgy will take place at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 26, 2010 at St. Stephen Catholic Church, 1310 Malzahn St. Rev. Fr. James G. Heller will officiate. Entombment will follow at Mt. Olivet Mausoleum. Friends may call at the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Road (off State) on Thursday from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A Vigil service will be prayed on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. conducted by Pastoral Associate, Audrey Wilson. John will lie in state at the church on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. It was John’s wish that any memorials be made to the Saginaw Public Libraries or to the general scholarship fund at Nouvel Catholic Central.
