Malone, Joan L., Saginaw, Michigan

Barbara P. Frost

Founder of J Malone Dance Studio since 1982, beloved mother and grandmother passed away Sunday, April 11, 2010. Age 72 years. The daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Zowislak) Carol, Joan was born October 2, 1937 in Flint, Michigan. She married Dwaine Malone who predeceased her in 1997. Joan taught dance for over 25 years. She was trained in Classical Ballet, Jazz and Tap. Her mentors were Lena Pelio and Robert Davis. Many of her students have gone on to be on Broadway, became choreographers, and some have opened their own studios. Joan taught with what she called “a tough love approach”. The discipline of the dance must also apply to life, for not all students will be dancers. Joan was a Ballet Theatre member and danced in such ballets as "Swan Lake", "Graduation Ball", and "Les Sylphyde." She created "Christmas at the Heritage," which was a production for the community, from dancers to singers to actors, for twelve years. Joan also created "American Heritage Dance Conventions." Her staff was from California, New York, Chicago, and Michigan. All of the staff were professionals and at the top of their fields. She opened her own dance studio in Flint, Michigan. In 1980, Joan moved to Freeland, Michigan and owned and operated J Malone Dance Studio in Saginaw, Merrill and Sebewaing. She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and supported the Elf Khurafeh Shrine and the American Diabetes Association. Surviving are one daughter and two sons from her marriage to David Friesorger, Maureen and Thomas Parker, Gladwin, David Friesorger, Baltimore, Maryland; Scott Friesorger, Ashley, Michigan; three step-sons and one step-daughter, Mark Malone, Scottsdale Arizona; Mike and Fran Malone, Grand Blanc; Paul and Tammy Malone, Scottsdale, Arizona; Patty and John Sturgis, Belding, Michigan; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
