Went to be with the Lord with angels by her side on July 7, 2010 after a long, hard battle with breast cancer, at her home. Melissa was 41 years old. She was born November 9, 1968 in Saginaw, MI to Kathleen Ann (Haley, Powers) Samyn and Dennis Powers. Melissa graduated from Freeland High School in 1986 after which she joined the United States Marine Corps and served until she was medically discharged. She served her country proud. She enjoyed spending time with her family, her church, listening to country music, and watching NASCAR. Melissa was a wonderful, loving daughter, sister, and mother. Melissa leaves behind her husband Donnie, her children Stephanie Hunter, Katie Hunter, Olivia, Dominique, and Donnie Jr., all residing in Jacksonville, NC. She is also survived by her mother and step-father; Kathleen and Gary Samyn of Essexville, MI. Her sister, Margo (James) Powers Hernden and her niece and nephew; Katie and Patrick Hernden of Bay City, MI. She also leaves behinds her loving grandmother, Cleo Haley, 12 aunts and uncles; Helen (Mitch) Michnick, Thomas (Elaine) Haley, Jack (Mary Ann) Haley, Fred (Marlene) Haley, Mary (Sherman) Whisman, and Karen (Bob) Colston. Along with 20 cousins and 26 second cousins. And many many friends. The family would like to thank her dear friend Margaret Griffin and her nurse Tina who were always there for Melissa till the end…and we thank you for that. Her life was her children, whom she loved and cherished till the end. She was predeceased in death by her loving grandparents, whom she adored; Phyllis and Harry Powers and her grandfather Thomas Haley. She will always be remembered and cherished. Her hell on earth is now over, and she can rest peacefully in the arms of the Lord. Melissa’s funeral and burial have already taken place. She was laid to rest on Monday, July 12 at Coastal Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, N.C. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Breast Cancer Research Foundation in Melissa’s name. There will be a memorial/celebration of Melissa’s life on Saturday, August 14 starting at 2:00 p.m. at her parent’s, Kathy and Gary Samyn, home, 215 W. Borton Road, Essexville, MI, 989-895-5402. “Everyone” is welcome to come.
