Bode, Esther A., Saginaw, Michigan

Passed away February 27, 2010.  Age 91 years.  Esther Gruendemann was born February 4, 1919, in Forrestville, Wisconsin, to August and Hermine (Detjen) Gruendemann.  The rite of Holy Baptism was administered at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Algoma, Wisconsin, by the sainted Rev. A. Schlei.  When she was eight, the family moved to Powers, Michigan.  She was confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Powers in 1931.   She graduated the valedictorian of her class at Powers-Spaulding High School.  A 1940 graduate of Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota, her first teaching position was in Gibbon, Minnesota.  In 1942, she was married to Roland A. Bode and moved to Sebewaing, Michigan.  She taught school in Millington, Richville, and Saginaw, and retired after 22 years.   She was devoted to her family and interested in reading, sewing, and quilting.  She was a member of the St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church on Court Street.  Survivng in addition to her husband are children; Judith Zitter, Courtland, New York; Lou (Rev. Carl) Pagel, St. Joseph, Michigan; Edith (Malcolm) Sillars, Buena Vista, Colorado; Lorna (Thomas) Fryer, Midland, Michigan; Rev. Marcus (Karen) Bode, Saginaw, Michigan; and Charlene (Curt) Jaeger, Green Bay Wisconsin; 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a daughter, Annette Kay, sisters Arvilla Page and husband Robert, Clara Kahrs and husband Harvey, Bertha Wachholz and husband Harold, and a brother Roland Gruendemann and wife Ruth.  Funeral service will take place at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Court and Bond Sts.  Rev. Carl Otto will officiate.  Friends may call at the W.L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Road, on Monday from 3:00-5:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Tuesday at church from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church on Court and Bond Sts.
