Passed away on Monday, September 20, 2010 at her home with her family at her side. She was 90 years old. Dorothy J. Markey was born on December 9, 1919 in Saginaw to the late William and Ethelyn (Laundra) Markey. She married Vernon L. Smith on August 14, 1943; he preceded her in death on May 10, 1963. She later married Clark R. Barton on October 14, 1967; he preceded her in death on October 18, 1990. Dorothy was employed by Michigan Bell, retiring in 1981, after over 20 years of service. She was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church. Dorothy was also a member of the Pioneer Club with Michigan Bell. She truly enjoyed cooking, gardening, and singing. Dorothy also loved to throw parties. She took great pride in watching U of M Football as well as the Detroit Tigers. For the past two years, Dorothy, treasured and cherished the time she spent with her great granddaughter, Haley. Surviving are a son, Chuck (Beverly) Smith; a step-son, Jerry (Patti) Barton; a step-daughter, Mary Fink, a stepdaughter-in-law, Jewell Barton, also Richard (Geraldine) Gage; 11 grandchildren: Brian, Erica and Shannon Smith, Rick (Sharon) Barton, David Barton, Jill (Paul) Huffman, Scott, Eric and Philip Barton, Katie Heffron, and Tony (Jennifer) Fink; several great grandchildren; a brother and two sisters: Vincent Markey, Delores Rutherford, and Gerry Dangel; three sisters-in-law, Eva Markey, Pauline Duby, Beverly Sandoval; a brother-in-law, Andy Sandoval, and a special friend, Dorothy Bruns. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Hooverman; two granddaughters: Amy and Lisa Gottleber; a stepson, Larry Barton; three brothers and a sister: Bob, Jim and Ted Markey, and Gen Choate. Dorothy’s Funeral Liturgy will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 23, 2010, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 511 W. Cornell St. Rev. Fr. Ronald J. Dombrowski will officiate. Rite of Committal will follow in St. Andrew Cemetery. Friends are welcome to visit with the family at Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Road (off State) on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. A Vigil Service will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening led by Sr. Janet Pewoski, SSJ. Dorothy will lie in state at the church on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Barton Family Discretionary Fund.
